The effect of ankle and hindfoot malalignment on foot mechanics in patients suffering from post-traumatic ankle osteoarthritis

Background Ankle and hindfoot malalignment is a common finding in patients suffering from post-traumatic ankle osteoarthritis. However, no studies have addressed the effect of concomitant foot deformities on intrinsic kinematics kinetics. Therefore, objective this study was to investigate kinetics multiple joints complex Methods Twenty-nine subjects with osteoarthritis participated study. Standardized weight-bearing radiographs were obtained preoperatively categorize as having cavus, planus or neutral alignment, based 4 X-ray measurements. All underwent standard gait assessment. A 4-segment model used estimate joint during gait. Statistical parametric mapping compare between groups. Findings There 3 key findings regarding overall function groups osteoarthritis: (i) altered frontal transverse plane inter-segmental angles moments Shank-Calcaneus Calcaneus-Midfoot cavus compared group; (ii) OA group, Midfoot-Metatarsus abduction sought compensate varus inclination joint; (iii) there significant differences Interpretation Future should integrate assessment osteoarthritis, provide additional insight into associated mechanical deficits compensation mechanisms
